One Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1989 four Cape Town blues aficionados walked onto the stage of a popular Kalk Bay venue and knocked out two sets of rip-roaring Chicago-style rhythm and blues.
The band was called the Blues Broers and they have been preaching their gospel of live music entertainment ever since with their trademark suits, shades and boogie-woogie. The current line-up includes the artful harmonica and bass playing of Rob Nagel, the scorching acoustic and electric guitars of Albert Frost, Simon Orange’s boogie-woogie keyboards and Jonno Sweetman’s jazz-tinged drums.
Most of the material they play is original, but they do occasionally slip in a classic Muddy Waters tune or a Ray Charles ballad. The Blues Broers have produced seven albums – their most recent, Into the Red’, released in Feb. 2014.Also expect skiffle tunes featuring the tin washboard and tea-chest bass.
