We could not have selected a better site for the Happy Hippo. Located right on the beach front and within walking distance of the entrance to uShaka Marine World Park.

Located at 222 Mahatma Gandhi Road (previously Point Road), Durban, the Happy Hippo is about as close to the action as you can get.

Situated within walking distance of Durban’s best beaches and on the doorstep of the UShaka Marine World, staying at the Happy Hippo means that you have easy access to many of Durban’s holiday attractions without the need for transport.

When you need to venture further afield or continue your exploration of South Africa, taxi, bus, train and air transport are all easily accessible. The airport shuttle bus from the new King Shaka airport picks up and drops off at our lodge. We are a main Baz Bus destination

We are in Durban Central, 500m from South Beach, 300m from UShaka Marine World and 1.5km from the city centre and serviced by a door-to-door airport shuttle bus. The Happy Hippo is decorated in a contemporary African ethnic theme; utilizing the vibrant colours shown through the South African flag and its beautiful people, and tastefully finished off with an industrial flavour. Whenever a new guest arrives, they always experience that wow factor! Everything on our premises pertains to the culture of our vibrant nation! Our location is unrivalled as we are right next to Ushaka Marine World, the largest marine themed park in Africa, and so close to the beach for those wanting to enjoy the sea, whether it be surfing, kayaking, sailing or just sun-bathing! The park offers an array of shops, restaurants and bars. The area has a few night clubs for those night owls.

Our rooms are decorated in different themes and are named with a famous South African term, so one gets to learn about this exciting nation and what it has to offer. We also have a roof-top bar called ‘The Globe’, as we get to meet people from all around the world! We have #ShisanyamaSundays, which are our BBQ/Braai days. We also have the #last Thursdays event at our #rooftopdurban where we celebrate young, upcoming stars through music, comedy and art. We offer free WiFi and have a curio shop which only supports local crafts and small business.

We offer our guests the convenience of booking all your day trips, safari’s and car hire at our reception, all in the name of making your stay an unforgettable one. Please note that we strive to ensure that all the operators that we choose to refer you to be either from upliftment programs that help grows our communities through tourism, thus creating sustainable tourism for all!  #WeDoTourism

Zacks – More than just good food

The 2018 DURBAN INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE PLACE OF IT’S BIRTH

In 2005 The First Durban International Blues Festival took place at Zack’s Wilson’s Wharf- home to the festival for many years after that.  For no other reason than adventure, need for a little more space with growing audiences and “testing change’ the organizers took the event to other venues, and whilst they may do so in the future , Zacks Wilson’s Wharf was the obvious and well loved “home of the DIBF” for the 2018 event- concurrent thoughts of both DIBF Organizers and blues fans ! With its “indoor/outdoor “ ambience, the salty sea water and sail ships an arms length away, Durban’s harbour and city lights, the venue is truly unique – not to mention safe parking  and close proximity for most Blues fans .

Zack’s, an independent Café, opened it’s doors on 1 June 2001 in Durban, KZN, South Africa and in true café style we are open seven days a week from 8.00 am till late, offering an extensive menu that caters for every taste, and a colourful, but deadly, cocktail menu with a loyal fan base that keeps coming back for more.

Zack’s pride themselves  on their flexibility, and where possible, would like to give you exactly what you want – even if it’s not on the menu… and remember ‘to err is human, to overindulge essential!!!’

Music is an essential ingredient in life and at Zack’s are active in the support of local musicians, and offer live music in all of their venues from mini rock shows to afternoon jazz and our regular open mic evenings which offer budding local musicians a platform to strut their stuff!!… Check out “What’s on”.

So, whether you’re looking for great food, exotic cocktails or a night of entertainment , get down to Zack’s where it’s… more than just good food!

Just so you know! Zack’s is 100% KZN, born, bred and baptized!

Have a look at the great menu…

A Tight Selection of Artists on this Year’s Blues Festival

July 23rd, 2018

We have a tight selection of artists for this year’s Durban International Blues Festival,” says co director and spokesperson for the event, Tanya van Agthoven Marais.

Unlike many other genres of live music and festivals, Blues has a somewhat “intimate” feel and the close up and personal vibe is the preferred one, according to her.

The line-up also takes cognisance of the audience suggestions over time, for a line up with more local /South African artists and this year audiences can look forward to listening to firm favourites and some newer names, some participating in the festival for the first time.

Thursday 01 November – Fender sponsors the only free evening with a line-up of well knowns at 7.00 pm: Sycamore Rock Academy, Tiffany Sheppard Band, Alchemy, Bobby and the Dynamites and the East Coast Basement Blues Band. The evening is hosted by Glenwood Village Music.

Friday   02 November –   The evening opens at 7.30 pm with the Durban Blues Band which will have been pulled up through the ranks under the mentorship of DIBF Development and Mentoring Director, Pinkie Mtshali. “These young artists will have been schooled on the blues genre, given music workshop guidance and opportunity to rehearse in order to perform on the billing in front of an audience- and for some, for the first time. The Durban International Blues Festival has always had a policy to hold these workshop and mentorship classes as another manner of educating musicians to the genre of this unique music style: many musicians- accomplished ones too- don’t even know they are playing the blues or that their music has a strong blues base,” Mtshali says.

The evening rolls out with LED and Jonathan Peyper – relative new comers to Durban audiences, but musicians who must not be ignored!

Saturday 03 November, the final evening, sees The Smoke Train return to the stage due to their undoubted success at the festival last year so if you enjoyed them- be sure to book early at Computicket as seating is limited and unreserved on all nights.

Following The Smoke Train is the formidable new band Black Harbour who are reaching for new heights every performance and who will undoubtedly excite the crowd and get them revved up for Australia’s Fiona Boyes– the international guest artist who will close the evening and the 2018 festival.

Tickets are on line already at Computicket and are R150 pre bought but there will be a limit number of tickets at the Box office on show night for R160. Seating is unreserved and on a first come, first serve basis.

The Durban International Blues Festival has chosen to perform from their old home of Zacks (at Wilson’s Wharf) where the menu is affordable and varied and will suit all tastes and a cash bar is available.

Don’t forget to bring extra cash for CD’S on sale (R100) and a selection of generic festival tee shirts available while stocks last –from R150 TO R200. There will also be the customary raffle or auction – so be prepared with extra cash! You wouldn’t want to lose out!
